This report is called a Civilian Traffic Collision Report and details the circumstances surrounding your car accident. After filling out the report, you will then need to report it to Kentucky State Police to comply with state law and ensure that you are able to obtain possible compensation for your damages.

How to File a Car Accident Report

Filing an accident report is a simple process. Complete the form either in hard copy or on the Kentucky State Police Website. Be sure to create two copies of the form: one for yourself and one for your insurance company. This is important to have as evidence should you need it later. If you have completed the form in-person, be sure to mail it within 10 days to the following address with your return address in the corner. Keep photos and notes to yourself or attach them to your copy of the form instead. While you are required to submit the report, you will not hear back from the police as they are not required to confirm filing.

How Long Do I Have to File a Kentucky Accident Report?

You are legally required to file a car accident report within 10 days of the accident. Filing the report in a timely manner is of utmost importance as if you need to file a claim against the negligent driver the earlier you have a paper trail of the accident the better. If you fail to file an accident report, you can be fined between $20 to $100.

Can I Receive a Copy of the Accident Report?

If you forgot to make copies of the accident report you are able to request a copy from the state. Each copy will cost $10 and you will need to verify authenticity by providing the report number, report date, and last name of the driver of the involved vehicles.
